37 Flashcards
what is the role of the kidneys?
Fluid balance
blood volume
blood pressure
from renal artery to renal vein whats the pathway?
segmental artery interlobar artery arcuate artery interlobular artery afferent arterioles Nephrons Venules interlobular vein arcuate vein interlobar vein
What is a nephron?
functional unit of the kidney filtration of blood at glomerulus glomerular capsule proximal convoluted tubule loop of henle distal convoluted tubule collecting duct
Nephron:
what happens in the renal corpuscle?
production of filtrate
Nephron:
what happens in the loop of henele?
further reabsorption of water and both sodium and chloride ions
Nephron:
what happens in the papillary duct?
delivery of urine to minor calyx
Nephron:
what happens in the connecting tubules and collecting duct?
variable reabsorption of water and reabsorbtion of secretion of Na K H and bicarbonate ions
Nephron:
what happens in the distal convoluted tubule?
secretion of ions, acids, drugs, toxins
variable reabsorption of water Na and Ca
Under hormone control
Function of the nephron?
filtration : pressure –> fluids, solutes, small molecules
reabsorption : from nephron –> return back to blood
secretion : from blood to nephron
What is a glomerulus?
vascular structure including specialized capillary network surrounded by the glomerular capsule of the nephron
directs blood into the filtration strucutes of the nephron
