Proteins Flashcards
Classes of amino acids (7)
Aliphatic Aromatic Sulphur containing amino acids Acidic Basic Polar Miscellaneous
Primary structure
Amino acid sequence
Secondary structure
Hydrogen bonding. 3D spatial arrangement of amino acids. Alpha helix and beta sheets
Tertiary structure
R groups interacting with each other folding
Quartenary structure
Polypeptide chains come together
Glycoproteins
More than 1 carbohydrate molecule covalently attached
Oligosaccharide
A few carbohydrate molecules exist together within a chain
Conjugated proteins
Proteins after co or post translational modification. Glycoproteins, lipoproteins, metalloproteins
Lipoproteins
Proteins combined with lipids. Found in cell membranes and transport hydrophobic molecules eg cholesterol in the blood
Metalloproteins
Protein molecules with metal ions in their structure. Various functions like enzyme hormone etc eg haemoglobin
Sickle cell anaemia
When the base changes so the beta chain is expressed differently (pro, val and glu Instead of pro glu glu) this gives it the sickle shape and makes it hard to get through capillaries
Globular proteins are for
Storage, enzymes, hormones, transporters, structural
Tissues where fibrous proteins are commonly found
Muscle fibres and connective tissues
Problems in fibrous proteins
Different amino acid sequence resulting in weak collagen being produced
Vitamin C needed for collagen
Membranous proteins types
Membrane transporter, membrane enzymes, cell adhesion molecule
