Injury to body Flashcards
definition of injury
damage caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals and radiation. synonymous with wound
mechanism of injury
impact, torsion, shearing, angulation, compression, traction, accel/decceleration
classification of injuries
sharp force, blunt force, ballistics
types of blunt force injury
abrasions (graze scratch), contusions (bruise), lacerations (cut, tear)
abrasions
superficial/partial thickness skin injury to epidermis. epidermal skin tags at edges, crushing from vertical force or scraping by tangential force. slight bleeding, heal quickly by scab, leave no scar
bruising is caused by
crushing of the dermal blood vessels by mechanical impact
contusion bruise
bruise to internal organs
interpretation of bruising
difficult if someone is on medication, age can affect, size doesn’t reflect severity, site of bruise is not always site of impact
lacerations caused by
impact against a flat surface, impact by an edge or pointed object, rotation of tissue on limb or torso, excess frictional or tearingforces
types of sharp force injuries
incised wounds or stab wounds
incised wounds are _____ than they are ______
longer than they are deep
lacerations characterised by
tissue bridges and rough edges, bruising sometimes
incised wounds characterised by
bleeding profusely, usually penetrates the full thickness of the skin, majority are knife wounds, clean cut, well defined margins, no bruising
incised wounds caused by
weapon or object with a keen or sharp edge
stab wounds are _____ than they are ______
deeper than they are long
