Citric Acid Cycle Flashcards
What is the citric acid cycle
Series of chemical reactions to release stored energy through the oxidation of acetyl- CoA derived from carbohydrates, fats and proteins
Where does citric acid cycle occur
Mitochondrial matrix
How did the citric acid cycle evolve
To harvest electrons that could then be used to completely oxidise food molecules to CO2 and H2O
What biosynthetic precursors can the cycle provide
Building blocks of nucleotide bases, heme groups, proteins
What is an anaplerotic reaction
A build up of a product triggers the activation of an enzyme that triggers another reaction eg build up of acetylCoA activating pyruvate carboxylase which converts pyruvate to oxaloacetate
