Imaging Flashcards
What is an x ray
electromagnetic packet of energy with a extremely short wavelength between 0.1 and 10 nm
how are x rays generated and how do they capture an image
stream of X rays in a machine, capture on film emulsion because emulsion contains silver halide so clumps form after exposure to light generated on luminescent screens
how are x rays generated and how do they capture an image
stream of X rays in a machine,
CT
rotating x ray tube, give iodinated contrast, axial image, can cause renal impairment if overexposed, used for trauma, cancer staging and response to treatment, guidance for procedures
ultrasound
high frequency sound pulses sent out then bounce back, can work through fluid, works cannot work through air
fluoroscopy
digital x ray. monitor moves along body and x ray flows continuously to create an image. shows movement of internal organs
why is iodinated contrast media used
enhances the visibility of vascular structures and organs. good for cancer
MRI
very detailed, non ionising radiation
