Code 1

A

Driving with red and/or blue flashing beacons or lights at all times. Sirens should be used when there is a risk to road users or where the driver requires another vehicle to give way. The use of supplementary warning devices such as air horns and ‘rumbler’ type devices are permitted providing they do not prevent road users from hearing the siren.

Q

POL003 - Emergency Response Policy
Who has responsibility for the appliance?

A

An appliance OIC has overall responsibility during any emergency response and will determine the code under which the appliance will respond. The OIC may direct a driver to slow down, however cannot request the driver of an appliance to speed up and travel faster than what the driver considers safe for the conditions.

When to use Code 1

A

Code 1 emergency response must be used where an appliance OIC conducts a Size Up based on the incident response information and a SPADRA and determines the threat to life and/or property necessitates a Code 1 response.
Any appliance responded due to an escalation of an incident, will proceed Code 1 unless otherwise stipulated.

Q

POL003 - Emergency Response Policy
CFA responding into FRV area

A

The initial CFA primary appliance from each CFA brigade responding into FRV jurisdiction may proceed Code 1, with any additional CFA appliances from each responding brigade responding Code 3. The FRV IC has the discretion to change this response where they deem necessary.

This does not apply where any escalation has triggered an increased CFA support response (eg. make tankers 10, respond 2nd alarm structure fire), or for fires with persons reported/unaccounted for.
