OMS 038 - Hazardous Trees
Conduct ongoing SPADRA to identify any hazardous trees, including trees along access and egress routes.
Tree hazards may include the following:
A
- Falling trees and branches
- Burning or fire damaged trees
- Dead or fire damaged trees on slopes where they may spear downhill
- Loose branches
- Trees that may become unstable due to machinery and equipment nearby

Responsibilities when aware of Hazardous Trees in area of operations
A
- Communicate the presence of identified hazardous trees to all units, crew members working in the area, to the immediate chain of command and in any SMEACSQ handover or to any change over crews
- Document the presence of hazardous trees in the IAP. Make note of any relevant communications or messaging including time of issue, particularly regarding deployment orders and safety messaging
- Ensure mop up/blacking out or patrol does not commence until a hazard tree assessment has been completed for that portion of the fire control line or mitigation controls are in place.
- Ensure Clear and Present Danger trees that remain standing on fire ground after the passage of the fire/incident are treated within the timeframe of current operations by appropriate qualified agency, or ensure an exclusion zone remains in place and communicated on scene handover

Exclusion Zone
A
- Ensure all personnel remain outside any exclusion zone where hazard type is visible
- Create an exclusion zone of 2 tree lengths around an identified tree hazard with yellow and black hazard tape if instructed to do so by OIC. In the absence of yellow and black hazard tape, any restriction/hazard tape may be used.

NOTIFICATIONS
A
- Notify Incident Controller or Sector Commander where a hazardous tree or hazardous trees have been identified
- Consider notifying DEECA (FFMVic), CFA, or LGA for further assessment and action of the exclusion zone
- Consider issuing a Red Flag Warning if there is a risk to crew safety
- Consider notifying other agencies working in the area
