Pharmacology Fundamentals Flashcards
How to prescribe right
Patient, drug, route, dose, time, outcome
How can you class drugs
By their mode of action, therapeutic use, chemical structure
What name do we use when giving drugs
Generic name
What is pharmacodynamics
What the drug does to the body
What is pharmacokinetics
What a body does to the drug
What is ADME
Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion
AdMinistration routes of medicines
Oral, injection IV, IM, subcutaneous, inhalation, sublingual or buccal, rectal, epithelial surfaces
Points about absorption
Occurs in systemic circulation, meds are absorbed depending on access
What is first-pass metabolism
Occurs during oral absorption, The Mets are absorbed by the food or enzymes and so the drugs never reach the target
How do you overcome first-pass metabolism
Use IV or buccal rather than oral
Most drugs bind to
Proteins (albumin)
Metabolism
Breaks down drugs
Metabolite is either
Inactive
Less active
Active (toxic/ therapeutic effect)
Activated (prodrug- has no effect and needs to be activated)
Sites of drug metabolism
Liver, kidney, GI tract, lungs and skin
CP450 is a
Super family of enzymes which metabolise 75% of drugs
