PA 8 Flashcards
Are you aware of what a PA does?
Absolutely. I’ve spent time shadowing and working alongside Physician Assistants, and I’ve seen firsthand how they care for patients in many of the same ways as physicians. They take histories, perform exams, order tests, prescribe medications, and even assist in surgery depending on their training and specialty.
Explain the role of a PA to a patient.
A PA is a medical professional who works on a healthcare team with doctors, nurses, and other providers. They diagnose illnesses, create treatment plans, and educate patients about their conditions. Think of a PA as a trusted partner in your care who can answer your questions, manage your treatments, and help guide you toward better health.
Describe what a PA does.
Day to day, a PA may see patients, write prescriptions, interpret lab results, and discuss findings with the supervising physician if needed. They also focus on patient education—making sure people fully understand their diagnoses and treatment options. In many states and specialties, PAs can perform procedures or assist in surgery.
What have you observed while shadowing?
I watched a PA in the emergency room who always took extra time to explain each step of care, whether it was stitching up a wound or comforting a family member. That sense of empathy and teamwork made a huge impression on me. It showed me how vital PAs are in creating a supportive, patient-centered environment.
Do you fully understand the role of a PA?
Yes, I do. PAs play a vital role on the healthcare team. They work closely with doctors but still have their own independence. I love how they blend medical knowledge, hands-on skills, and genuine care for patients. That’s what made me choose this path.
