If I found out my classmate was romantically involved with her preceptor, I would be concerned about the conflict of interest and the power imbalance. I would talk with her and suggest she think about how this could affect her education, the preceptor, and the patients. I would also encourage her to speak with a trusted faculty member or advisor for guidance. If it violated any rules, it might need to be reported, but I would approach the situation gently, trying to support her while following school policies.
A FRIEND IN YOUR CLASS CONFIDES IN YOU THAT HIS MOTHER WAS RECENTLY DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER. HE IS OVERWHELMED AND MAY DROP OUT OF SCHOOL TO SPEND TIME WITH HIS MOTHER. HOW DO YOU COUNSEL YOUR FRIEND?
I would let my friend know I understand how hard this is for him and that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. I would encourage him to talk with his mother and family to see how they can support one another. I’d suggest he reach out to school resources, like counseling services or an academic advisor, to explore options for adjusting his schedule instead of dropping out. I’d remind him that it’s okay to ask for help and that taking time off can be an option, but he might be able to find a balance that lets him be there for his mother while still continuing school.
