Q

Tell me about yourself?

A

Hello, my name is Scott Longmaid. I’ve been married to my wife, Tanuja, for over 20 years, and we have two children: Dylan, who’s 14, and Emily, who’s 3. We also have two cats that keep us on our toes. I love spending time with my family, I enjoy lifting weights and hiking with Dylan.

I’m a big fan of science-focused podcasts. Peter Attia and Andrew Huberman are two of my favorites, because they dive into topics like health, neuroscience, and longevity. I’m also pretty hands-on. If something breaks around the house, I’ll hop on YouTube and figure out how to fix it. In fact, I even built my backyard deck from scratch.

Professionally, I recently retired as a Sergeant from the NYPD. I am an EMT at Englewood hospital, I’m finishing up my Biochemistry degree, and I do research and NYU about nudler lab where I study alkylation damage in DNA and I’m also working on a project in bacteria where I’m trying to identify genes for novel transporter in E. coli. My passion for science and helping others drives me toward becoming a Physician Assistant. I truly enjoy connecting with people—whether they’re my patients, colleagues, or my own family—and I’m excited to bring that compassion and curiosity into PA school and eventually to my future patients.

What do you like to do for fun?

A

I love being active with my family. Lifting weights with my teenage son and going on hikes to explore new trails are two of my favorite pastimes. I also enjoy listening to science podcasts to stay curious and keep learning. It’s a great way to connect with each other and unwind after busy days.

Q

Tell me about some of your hobbies.

A

I’m pretty handy around the house. If something breaks, I jump on YouTube to figure out how to fix it—like the time I built our backyard deck from scratch. It’s a great way to challenge myself and pick up new skills. I love seeing a project through from start to finish and solving problems along the way.

Q

What is the last book you read?

A

The last book I read was Brain Energy by Dr. Christopher Palmer. It really broadened my understanding of how metabolic health impacts mental health and the brain’s energy usage. The book opened my eyes to how intertwined our mind and body systems truly are.

Q

What is your life saying?

A

“Always keep learning and keep helping.” I believe in always moving forward improving my skills, knowledge, and how I help others. That mindset guides me whether I’m learning a new lab technique or fixing something at home. It keeps me curious and compassionate in every aspect of life.

I often say, ‘No one is coming,’ a phrase I learned from Tal Ben-Shahar’s positive psychology course at Harvard university, which reminds me to take responsibility for my life and keep pushing forward, even when it gets tough.”
