Class 9
Hazmat Diamond
Top (12 o’clock) Red/Flammable
3 o’clock - Yellow/Reactivity
6 o’clock - White/Specific Hazard
9 o’clock - Blue/Health
Which zone is considered contaminated?
Only properly trained rescuers w/proper PPE is allowed in this zone.
HOT
What zone surrounds the hot zone?
This zone is where decontamination occurs, should only be entered by hazmat specialists wearing appropriate PPE.
WARM
This zone is considered the “clean” area. This zone is where triage & pt treatment happens. This is also where command post is located.
COLD
Who sets up zones?
Hazmat Specialists
Which hazmat gear has the greatest respiratory AND skin protection, fully encapsulated suit, covers the body & SCBA? GAS TIGHT.
A - Fully encapsulated chemical suits
You would use this type of PPE when you need a high level of respiratory protection, but are not at risk of skin absorption. Worn w/SCBA & often worn by responders providing decontamination.
B - Tyvex suit, boots, gloves, hard hat, & SCBA
This type of gear is designed to protect against a known substance. It provides minimal splash protection. IS worn with respirator. Requires filters for known agents.
C - Tyvex suit w/respirator/filters
This PPE that is not usually worn in hazmat incidents, no respiratory protection, other than perhaps a dust mask.
D (jumpsuit, N95)
What chemical is a pesticide used in terrorist attacks and causes blisters to moist areas?
Phosphogene
What chemical is a moderately water soluble & causes higher amount of damage to mid-airway?
Chlorine
Which chemicals are highly water soluble and cause higher amount of damage to the upper airway?
Hydrogen Chloride & Ammonia
What type chemicals cause higher amount of damage to lower airways?
Less water soluble chemicals
Which chemicals make mustard gas? And where in the airway would you see the most damage?
Chlorine & Ammonia
The direct exposure of a pt to a hazmat is called what?
Primary Contamination
What is is called when a hazmat is transferred to a person from another person or from contaminated objects?
Secondary Contamination
This applies to liquids held inside any type of closed container. It directly correlates to the speed at which a material will evaporate once its released from its container.
Vapor Pressure
This compares the hazmat density to the density of air.
Vapor Density
The maximum concentration of a toxin that someone can be exposed to for a 40hr work week over a typical 30yr career.
Threshold limit value
The amount of material in a single dose that causes the death of a specified number of the group of test animals exposed by any route other than inhalation. (Death by any exposure except inhalation)
Lethal Dose
The concentration of the material in the air that can kill a specified number of test animals. (Inhalation death)
Lethal Concentration
What are you at higher risk for from a house fire?
Cyanide Exposure
What does Cyanide smell like?
Bitter Almonds
Is 208L - can be made of cardboard, polyethylene, & stainless steel?
55 gallon drum
Above or below ground, Can be made of aluminum, steel, or plastic.
Horizontal Storage Tanks
119-703gal - plastic surrounded by a stainless steel web
Storage Tote
5,000-6,000 gal - can be pressurized or non-pressurized - Can be used to ship & store gasous substances (ex: liquid nitrogen) can be shipped by air/sea/land, all modes of transportation.
Intermodal tank
Can be made from plastic, paper, or plastic lines paper - Used to store Solids & powders
Bags
Glass, plastic, or steel container, can hold 5-15 gal, usually in a protective wood, foam, fiberglass, or steel box to prevent breakage: nitric acid & sulphuric acids.
Carboy
compressed gases, like O2 tanks
Cylinder
bulk packaging that is part of motor vehicle
Cargo Tank
oval shaped, 6, 000-10, 000gal - non-pressurized, made of aluminum or stainless steel
Flammable Liquid Tanker
round (ununsulated) or horseshoe shaped tank (insulated), carries 6,000-7,000 gal of liquids, transports flammable liquids, corrosives or poisons
Chemical Hauler
small diameter, reinforcing rings around the tank, 6,000 gal, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, & sodium hydroxide
Corrosive Tanker
1,000-11,000gal - high working pressure, 250psi, round ends, made of steel or stainless steel
Pressure cargo tanker
Relies on tank insulation to keep cool temps
Cryogenic Tanker
carries compressed gases, pressurized to 3,000-5,000 psi, each tube can carry a different kind of gas, hydrogen, helium, methane, and oxygen.
Tube Trailer
dry bulk goods (powders, grains, etc, not pressurized, generally have a V shape with rounded sides to funnel contents towards the bottom
Dry, Bulk Cargo Tank
Conventional, truck-cab chassis with a modular body that can be transferred to a newer chassis as needed. (We don’t have any of these)
Type 1
Standard van, forward-control integral cab body, (Ex: 131, 132, 133)
Type 2
Specialty van, forward-control integral cab-body, that can be transferred to a newer chassis as needed. (We don’t have any of these)
Type 3
8 steps to special rescue
1.) Preperation
2.) Response
3.) Arrival & Scene Size-Up
4.) Stabilization if Scene
5.) Access
6.) Disentanglement
7.) Removal

The pillars of a vehicle that hold the roof up, are called what? Name and location of each?
A post - The one that runs between the windshield and the window
B post - between the front & rear door/windows
C post - behind the rear doors
D (SUV’s) E, F, G posts can be found on the larger vehicles, large vans & buses
