What class of drug is Naloxone Hydrochloride?
Opioid antagonist, antidote.
What is the mechanism of action of Naloxone?
inhibits narcotic receptor sites. Reverses respiratory depression secondary to opiate drugs.
What are the indications for using Naloxone?
Opiate overdose, reversal of CNS and respiratory depression induced by opioids, decreased LOC & coma of unknown origin.
What are the contraindications for Naloxone use?
Do not use on a newborn if the mother is addicted to narcotics, may cause withdrawal. Use with caution in narcotic-dependent patients and neonates of narcotic-addicted mothers.
What are the adverse reactions or side effects of Naloxone?
cardiac arrest, dyspnea, dysrhythmias, diaphoresis, hypertension, N/V, pulmonary edema, pulmonary edema, restlessness, seizures, tachycardia, withdrawal symptoms
What is a notable caution when administering Naloxone?
Seizures without causal relationship have been reported. May not reverse hypotension. Use caution when administering to narcotic addicts (potential violent behavior).
What is the half-life consideration for Naloxone?
Half-Life of naloxone is often shorter than the half-life of narcotics; repeat dosing may be required. In cardiac arrest, naloxone is generally not beneficial.
What is the dosage and administration for adults using Naloxone?
0.4 to 2 mg IM, IV, IO, SQ, ET, IN. Repeat every 2-3 minutes if needed to 10 mg total dose.
What is the duration of action for Naloxone?
Onset: < 2 Minutes, Peak effect: Variable, Duration: 30 - 60 Minutes.
