Class of Diazepam (Valium)
Benzodiazepine, long-acting, sedative-hypnotic, anticonvulsant, Schedule IV drug.
MOA of Diazepam (Valium)
Potentiate, effects of inhibitory neurotransmitters, raises the seizure threshold. Induces amnesia & sedation.
Indications for Diazepam (Valium)
anxiety & agitation, alcohol withdrawal, cocaine OD, muscle relaxant, chemical restraint. Status Epilepticus, sedation for medical procedures (intubation, vent pts, Cardioversion),
Contraindications of Diazepam (Valium)
Low BP, Coma, Hypersensitivity, Head Injury, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, Myasthenia Gravis, respiratory depression.

Adverse Reactions of Diazepam (Valium)
Ataxia, Confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, Resp depression, HA, hypotension, N/V, tissue necrosis, venous irritation, phlebitis, tachycardia, thrombosis
“Note” for Diazepam (Valium)
Note: OD may be revered with Flumazenil
Dosage of Diazepam for adults for seizure
5mg IV, SLOWLY, over 5 mins. Or 10mg IM.
Dosage of Diazepam for anxiety
2-10mg IV/IM
Dosage of Diazepam for premedication for Cardioversion
5-15mg IV over 5-10mins prior to Cardioversion
Dosage of Diazepam for PEDS seizure
0.05-0.1mg/kg IV SLOWLY or 0.1-0.2mg/kg IM
Duration of Action of Diazepam
Onset: 2-5mins
Peak: 15-30 mins
Duration: 20-50 mins
