0.9% Sodium Chloride Flashcards
Class of NACL
Isotonic crystalloid solution
MOA of NACL
Normal saline replaces water & electrolytes
Indications of NACL
Heat Related problems (heatstroke & heat exhaustion), freshwater drowning, hypovolemia, DKA, KVO.
Contraindications of NACL
The use of NACL should not be considered in pts w/heart failure because circulatory overload can be easily induced.
Adverse reactions of NACL
Rare in therapeutic dosages.
Drug interactions of NACL
Few in emergency setting
Dosage of NACL
Pt condition will dictate rate of adm. Many situations, such as severe heatstroke, DKA, & freshwater drowning will require rapid adm. Other instances will require more moderate dosing.
Neonates: fluid bolus: 10mg/kg IV given over 5-10 mins. Multiple bolus’ may be given if pt remains hypovolemic, may aide on improved perfusion & clearance of acid.
Duration of action of NACL
Short-term therapy
