Neuroglia & glial cells Flashcards
Neuroglia
provide? how many? located? known as? what don’t they do?
aka glial cells provide various support functions to neurons 5-50 times more numerous than neurons found in CHS & PNS DO NOT conduct or carry impulses readily multiply & divide "glue" of nervous tissue
what are the 4 types of neuroglia in the CNS
astrocytes
oligodendrocytes
microglia
ependymal cells
astrocytes
functions? description? attached to?
star shaped, largest & most numerous
attached to blood capillaries & neurons
-restricts movement of substances btwn blood & neurons of CNS (cerebrospinal fluid)
provide nutrients to neurons (blood carries nutrients)
regulate ion concentrations
remove excess neurotransmitters (too much ACh is bad)
oligodendrocytes
function?
produce & maintain myelin
Microglia
description? job?
(small)
spine-like projections
acts as phagocytes
-remove damaged nerve tissue & invading microbes
Ependymal cells
description? location? function?
simple squamous or columnar shape
have cilia
line brain ventricles & central canal of spinal cord
-protects & nourishes CNS
produce & assist in circulation of cerebrospinal fluid
2 types of neuroglia in PNS are?
Schwann cells
Satellite cells
Schwann cells
form myelin sheath around axons
aids in regeneration of damaged PNS nerve fibers (usually sensory)
Satellite cells
flat cells, surround cell bodies located in PNS ganglia
provide structural support
regulate exchanges of material btwn cell body & interstitial fluid
whats interstitial fliud?
fluid btwn surrounding cells
what can neurons not do that neuroglia can
neurons cannot readily multiply & divide
what does it mean by neuroglia being the glue of nervous tissue?
held together
purple in microscope= neurons, surrounding= neuroglia
