Blood Flow Through Heart & Coronary Circulation Flashcards
Chamber Walls (3)
Atrial Walls
Left Ventricle Wall
Right Ventricle Wall
Atrial Walls
description? function?
thin-walled
collect and pump blood only a short distance
Left Ventricle Wall
description? function?
thickest
must pump blood through entire body
Right Ventricle Wall
description? function?
thicker than atria, thinner than left ventricle wall
only pumps blood to lungs
Pressure Gradients in the Heart
CV system is what kind of system? what does that mean/
“closed-circuit” system
-blood flows in a loop, doesn’t leave the vessels
Pressure Gradients in the Heart
how does the pressure gradient come about? what happens when the atria contract? ventricles contract?
chamber contraction increases the pressure on fluid within, causes blood flow down its pressure gradient
- atria contract, high blood pressure within forces AV valves to open
- ventricles contract & pressure of blood increases which forces the SL valves to open
coronary circulation
myocardium’s own network of blood vessels
- -supply O2 & nutrients to heart muscle wall
- coronary arteries
- coronary veins
coronary arteries
description? function? location
O2 rich blood
- deliver blood to heart muscle when heart relaxes
- from aorta
coronary veins
description? function? location?
O2 poor blood
- receives blood from heart muscle
- drains into coronary sinus
different coronary arteries?
branches from ascending aorta
- left coronary artery
- right coronary artery
left coronary artery
aka? function?
- aka the ‘widow maker’ (most common one that causes heart attack)
- supplies O2 to anterior ventricle walls, left atrium
right coronary artery
function?
supples O2 to right atrium wall, right ventricle wall
coronary artery obstruction
what kind of obstruction is possible?
partial obstruction
total obstruction
partial coronary artery obstruction?
aka? involves?
mycardial ischemia
-aka Angina pectoris
-severe chest pain accompanies ischemia
(like heart attack, pain, heart burn)
total coronary artery obstruction?
aka? involves?
aka heart attack (caused by plaque build up in arteries)
INFARCTION- tissue death
-replaced by scar tissue
