  • Low levels of hypocretin, a protein which is responsible for controlling appetite and sleep patterns

How does narcolepsy present?

A
  • Typical onset in teenage years
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Cataplexy: sudden loss of muscle tone triggered by emotion
  • Sleep paralysis
  • Vivid hallucinations upon sleep/waking
