Lambert Eaton Syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
What is Lambert Eaton syndrome?
A
An autoimmune condition affecting the neuromuscular junction, similar to MG
2
Q
What is the pathophysiology of LES?
A
- Antibodies against voltage-gated calcium channels which damage these channels in the presynaptic membrane which means less acetylcholine can be released and so reduced muscle contraction
- Can be produced in response to small-cell lung cancer
3
Q
How does LES present?
A
- Proximal muscle weakness
- Autonomic dysfunction e.g. dry mouth, blurred vision
- Reduced/absent tendon reflexes
- Symptoms improve after activity
4
Q
How is LES treated?
A
- Exclude emalignancy
- Amifampridine
- Pyridostigmine
- IVIG
