An acute paralytic polyneuropathy which affects the peripheral nervous system, often triggered by Campylobacter/CMV/EBV infection
2
Q
What is the pathophysiology of GBS?
A
- B cells of immune system create antibodies against antigens on triggering pathogen
- These match proteins on peripheral neurones
- anti-GM1 antibodies in some patients
3
Q
How does GBS present?
A
- Symptoms present 2-4 weeks after infection
- Progressive ascending weakness
- Peripheral loss of sensation
- Can have some back/neuropathic pain
- Reduced reflexes
4
Q
How is GBS investigated?
A
- Nerve conduction studies
- LP with CSF showing raised protein only
5
Q
How is GBS managed?
A
- Supportive care
- VTE prophylaxis
- IV Immunoglobulins/Plasmapheresis
- Recovery can often take years
