A
A disease caused by Plasmodium protozoa spread by the female mosquite, usually Plasmodium Falciparum

How does malaria present?
A
- Fever which spikes high ever 48 hours
- Fatigue
- Headache
- N+V
- Myalgia
- Pallor
- Hepatosplenomegaly
- Jaundice

How is malaria investigated?
A
- Malaria blood film
- 3 negative samples over 3 consecutive days are needed to exclude malaria

How is malaria managed?
A
- All falciparum malaria need admission
- Artesunate
- Quinine
- Artemeisinin combination therapy

What are complications of malaria?
A
- Cerebral malaria
- Seizures
- Reduced consciousness
- AKI
- DIC

A
- Proguanil with atovaquone (Malarone)
- Doxycycline
