What is diabetic neuropathy?
A
The most common chronic complication of diabetes: Peripheral nerve dysfunction due to hyperglycaemia

What are risk factors for DN?
A
- Poorly controlled DM
- Older age
- Tall stature
- Prolonged duration of diabetes
- CVD

How does DN present?
A
- Can be asymptomatic
- Peripheral pain and loss of sensation in ‘glove and stocking’ distribution
- Abnormal burning/tingling/numbness

How is DN investigated?
A
- Diagnosis of exclusion
- Fasting blood glucose/HbA1c
- TFTs, B12, U+E, LFTs, FBC, ESR

How is DN managed?
A
Pain: Amitriptyline, Duloxetine, Gabapentin, Pregabalin
Topical capsaicin can be used
