What are risk factors for DN?

A
  • Poorly controlled DM
  • Older age
  • Tall stature
  • Prolonged duration of diabetes
  • CVD

How does DN present?

A
  • Can be asymptomatic
  • Peripheral pain and loss of sensation in ‘glove and stocking’ distribution
  • Abnormal burning/tingling/numbness

How is DN investigated?

A
  • Diagnosis of exclusion
  • Fasting blood glucose/HbA1c
  • TFTs, B12, U+E, LFTs, FBC, ESR

How is DN managed?

A

Pain: Amitriptyline, Duloxetine, Gabapentin, Pregabalin
Topical capsaicin can be used
Manage diabetes and risk factors
