Mechanism of Action
A
inhibit gluconeogenesis to decrease hepatic glucose production
(but some activity so less hypoglycaemic risk)
suppress appetite to limit weight gain

Adverse Effects
A
GI upset - nausea, vomiting & diarrhoea
so modified release can be given

Contraindications
A
eGFR<30mL/min
alcohol intoxication
as excreted unchanged by kidneys

Drug Interactions
A
drugs that may impair renal function - ACEi, NSAIDs & diuretics
diuretics (loop/thiazides) also increase glucose so can reduce metformin action
