Co-careldopa Flashcards
1
Q
Drug Class
A
levodopa (dopamine precursor) & carbidopa (peripheral DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor)
2
Q
Common Indications
A
Parkinson’s Disease
3
Q
Mechanism of Action
A
L-DOPA crosses BBB (unlike dopamine) & converted to dopamine by DOPA decarboxylase in substantia nigra.
carbidopa increases L-DOPA to brain so reduced dose/side effects
4
Q
Adverse Effects
A
impulse control disorders involuntary movements nausea hypotension psychosis tachycardia
5
Q
Drug Interactions
A
pyridoxine (vit B6) increases peripheral breakdown of L-DOPA
MAOIs risk hypertensive crisis
antipsychotics block dopamine receptors so parkinsonism side effect
