Lesson 8, Chapter 5 Flashcards
Blood pressure
The amount of pressure your blood puts on the walls of your blood vessels
Systolic pressure
The amount of pressure in your arteries when the left ventricle of your heart contracts
Diastolic pressure
The amount of pressure in your arteries when your left ventricle isn’t contracting
Elevated blood pressure
A blood pressure with a systolic pressure of 120 to 129 and a diastolic pressure less than 80
Stage 1 Hypertension
A blood pressure with systolic pressure of 130 to 139 or diastolic pressure 80 to 89.
Stage II hypertension
A blood pressure with systolic pressure of 140 or higher or diastolic pressure 90 or higher.
Hypertensive crisis
A blood pressure with systolic pressure over 180 and/or diastolic pressure over 120; a life-threatening condition.
Primary hypertension
High blood pressure that develops without an obvious reason
Secondary hypertension
When another disease, like diabetes, causes hypertension
Preeclampsia
The development of blood pressure of 140/90 or higher during the second half of pregnancy
Eclampsia
The development of blood pressure of 160/110 or higher during the second half of pregnancy
Ischemic stroke
A stroke where a blood vessel in the gets blocked by a clot
Hemorrhagic stroke
A stroke where a blood vessel in the brain bursts
Coronary artery disease
The accumulation of plaques that narrow the diameter of coronary arteries
Atherosclerosis
A buildup of fatty substance called plaque in blood vessels
Cardiac ischemia
An inadequate blood supply to the heart
Angina
Chest pain due to an inadequate blood supply to the heart
Heart failure
A weakening of the heart so that it can’t pump normal amounts of blood
Heart attack
Damage to the heart resulting from a complete blockage of a coronary artery
EKG
A diagnostic exam that monitors the electrical activity of the heart.
Normal sinus rhythm
A normal heart rate and normal contraction of the atria and ventricles.
Sinus tachycardia
An abnormally fast heart rate.
Sinus bradycardia
An abnormally slow heart rate.
Atrial fibrillation
A sinus rhythm where the two atria beat in an uncoordinated manner.
