Lesson 1, Chapter 3 Flashcards
Life Span
The time from conception until death
Modern Cell Theory
A theory that states that the cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of all living cells; cells come from other cells by cell division
Energy
The ability to take action or make a change
ATP Molecule
Molecules that store the energy we obtain from the food we eat
Reproduction
The ability to produce offspring; the ability of cells to divide
Responsiveness
A term that describes the general ability to respond to changes in the internal or external environment
Excitability
The firing of neurons (nerve cells) in response to slight changes in the internal or external environment
Stimulus
A change in the environment that affects the body
Response
The activity that occurs in response to a stimulus
Conductivity
A stimulus in one part of the body causes a change in another part of the body
Reflex Arc
The automatic response to a stimulus without conscious thought
Contractility
The ability of the body to move it its parts parts or change their shapes
Adjustments
Continual, quick responses due to changes in the environment
Adaptation
The ability of the body to make long-term changes in response to environmental changes or activity
Capillaries
Very small blood vessels that transfer oxygen to cells
