Lesson 6, Chapter 5 Flashcards
Golgi tendon organs
Sensory structures embedded in tendons
Rupture
Complete tearing of a tendon or muscle belly
Golgi tendon reflex
A signal, initiated by input from golgi tendon organs, that causes a muscle to stop contracting to avoid damage to the tendon
Muscle spindles
Sensory structures embedded in a muscle
Stretch reflex
A signal, initiated by input from muscle spindles, that causes a muscle to contract to avoid overstretching muscle fibers
Tendonitis
Microtears of tendon fibers, accompanied by inflammation
Sprain
An injury to a tendon or ligament
Muscle strain
An injury to muscle fibers
Chronic strains
Muscle strains due to overuse of muscles
Bruises
Injuries to skin and muscle caused by a blunt force
Acute compartment syndrome
An injury caused by severe bruising, threatening the health of muscle fibers and nerves
Myositis ossificans
Abnormal bone formation due to a severe bruise
Disuse atrophy
A reduction in the size and strength of muscles after a period of not using them
