Lesson 1, Chapter 1 Flashcards
Atoms
The smallest complete unit of physical matter
Electrons
Subatomic particles that have a negative charge and travel around the nucleus of an atom or ion
Protons
Subatomic particles that have a positive charge and are located in the nucleus of an atom or ion
Neutrons
Subatomic particles that have a neutral charge and are located in the nucleus of an atom or ion
Molecule
A particle formed when two or more atoms bind together; the atoms can be the same or different
Ions
Particles that have a different number of electrons and protons; they have an electrical charge
Compounds
A particle formed when two or more atoms bind together; the atoms must be different from each other
Ionic bond
A chemical bond formed when ions are electrically charged to each other
Covalent bond
A chemical bond formed when atoms share electrons
Energy
The capacity to take some kind of action or make some kind of change
Potential energy
Stored energy
Kinetic energy
The energy of motion
Enzymes
A class of proteins that help chemical reactions occur more quickly
Activation energy
The amount of energy needed for a chemical reaction to occur
Tay Sachs Disease
A devastating disease caused by a missing enzyme necessary to break down fat in the brain
