Lesson 2, Chapter 3 Flashcards
Mitosis
The process of cell division.
Interphase
The phase of the cell cycle where the cell’s DNA molecules are duplicated.
Chromosomes
The cell’s DNA molecules after they have condensed during prophase.
Dyad
Two identical strands of genetic material that together look like X’s under a microscope.
Centromere
The point where dyads are connected.
Metaphase
The phase of mitosis where the dyads line up midway between the two sides of the cell.
Anaphase
The phase of mitosis where the two strands of the dyads are pulled on by the spindle fibers and separated.
Sister chromatids What the two strands of a dyad are called when they separate from each other and move to the oppose ends of the cell.
What the two strands of a dyad are called when they separate from each other and move to the oppose ends of the cell.
Telophase
The last phase of mitosis where new nuclear membranes form around each set of DNA molecules.
Cytokinesis
A process which occurs during anaphase and telophase; cell organelles are shared between the two daughter cells and a contractile ring contracts, creating two separate cells.
