Lesson 1, Chapter 2 Flashcards
Subatomic particles
The tiny particles that make up an atom
Atom
The smallest complete unity of physical matter
Molecule
A particle that is made up of two or more atoms bound together
Carbohydrates
Molecules that serve as your primary energy source
Lipids
A major class of molecules that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, but relatively few oxygen atoms
Triglyceride
A type of lipid that is stored as fat and that can be used as an energy source
Phospholipid
A type of lipid that is the main component of our cell membranes
Cholesterol
A type of lipid used to strengthen cell membranes and to make testosterone and estrogen
Proteins
A major class of molecules that are made up of chains of amino acids bound together
ATP
A nucleic acid that stores energy in its chemical bonds
DNA and RNA
Nucleic acids that tell our cells how to build proteins
Organelles
Different structures found inside the cell that have specific functions
Cells
The smallest complete units of living matter
Tissues
Groups of cells that have the same function
Epithelial tissue
A type of tissue that lines your organs and forms your glands
Connective tissue
A major class of tissue that contains very different tissues such as blood, bone, and cartilage; types connect body parts together, protects, supports, cushions, and insulates the body
Nervous tissue
Tissue that makes up sensory receptors, brain, spinal cord, and nerves
Muscle tissue
Tissue that is designed for contraction (the shortening of tissue)
Skeletal Muscle Tissue
Muscles tissue that attaches to bones; called voluntary
Smooth Muscle Tissue
Muscle tissue found in hollow organs and blood vessels; called involuntary
Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Muscle tissue found in the heart; called involuntary
Organs
Groups of tissues that are specialized for a specific function
Organ systems
Groups of organs that work closely together
