Lesson 6, Chapter 4 Flashcards
Motor neurons
The neurons that tell muscles to contract
Neurotransmitter
A general name for the chemical secreted by neurons that will affect muscle fibers
Motor unit
One motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it controls
Neuromuscular junction
The presynaptic terminal of a motor neuron, the synapse, and the membrane of a muscle fiber affected by the motor neuron
Presynaptic terminal
The end of a branch of a motor neuron
Synapse
The space between the end of a motor neuron (the presynaptic terminal) and a muscle fiber
Acetlycholine
The specific neurotransmitter secreted by a motor neuron
Multiple motor unity summation
The number of motor neurons sending nervous impulses will increase when more muscle fibers need to contract
Motor Memory
Gaining a skill of protein fibers found in muscle fibers
Myofibrils
Smaller strands of protein fibers found in muscle fibers
Actin and myosin
Filaments of protein found in myofibrils
Sarcomere
A unit of two units of actin separated by one unit of myosin
Z discs
Structures that connect sarcomeres to each other
