What are some clinical tips to enhancing adherence?

A
  • Present information/rationale clearly and simply
  • Write down information and instructions
  • Check patient’s expectations about treatment
  • Check patient’s motivation re treatment or behaviour change (stages of change)
  • Involve patient in the decision-making about the treatment plan
  • Tailor the treatment plan to individual patients and their situation
  • Use of prompts and reminders
  • Use of specific techniques for behaviour change (e.g., motivational interviewing)
  • Involve others – both other health professionals and family members
