Lecture 3 Infection and Immunity Flashcards
- What does pyogenic mean?
- What is pus?
- What is an abscess?
- What sort of arrangement do staph aureus form and what do strep pyo form?
- Are they both gram + pyogenic cocci?
-
- What does being a facultative anaerobic mean?
- What do they do on blood agar?
- Are they usually part of our micro biome?
- Are they opportunistic or obligate pathogens?
- Do they make a biofilm?
- What is a biofilm in general terms?
- What are super antigens?
- Their cell walls are similar and PAMPs - meaning?
- What are the key differences between the two? (3). With that, what simple test can you do to see which of the two is causing the infection?
-
Aureus:
- What is PVL and what 3 things does it do?
- What is coagulase and what does it do?
-
What is the thing with skin and microbes?
As infections get depper through skin - more likley to see gram negative causing infections and more likely to see anerobic bac causing infections and the deeper the infections go, the more likely it is to be polymicrobial (mix of both gram + and gram -)
Skin infections arent just staph and strep but tje more serious infections are usuallly gram -ve but we focus on staphs and streps
ANd mixed infections - both +ve and -ve
What is impetigo, where does it happen, what are the two types and what is the diagnosis?
-
What is folliculitis, where, caused by what?
-
Furuncle - what is it, arise from what, caused by what? Risk factors?
-
Furuncle - what is it, arise from what, caused by what? Risk factors?
-
Carbuncles - what is it? Usually where? Caused by what? What’s the treatment? Symptoms?
-
Cellulitis:
- What is it?
- Most common etiological agents?
- Symptoms?
- Complications and risk factors?
- Treatment and diagnosis?
-
Ersipelas:
- What is it?
- What microbe?
- Complications?
- Treatment?
- Symptoms?
- Risk facots
-
Necrotising fasciitis
- What’s it all about and what causes it?
- Diagnosis etc?
-
Circulation toxins
- tell me about staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome
- tell me about scarlet fever
-
Treatments for:
- Impetigo/pyodermas
- Abcess
- Cellulitis
- Necrotising fasciitis
-
What are other important staphs and streps
