Lame - bovine nerves Flashcards
What are the 3 main nerves of the bovine forelimb below the elbow?
Radial nerve
Median nerve
Ulnar nerve
Where are the radial, medial and ulnar nerves in relation to each other?
Radial nerve - down dorsal (front) aspect of leg
Median nerve - down lateral side of leg
Ulnar nerve - down palmar (back) aspect of leg
Where does the radial nerve arise from?
C7, C8 and T1
What innervation does the radial nerve provide?
Motor innervation to the carpus and digit extensors
Sensory innervation to the lateral side of the limb
What can cause radial paralysis?
Excessive traction on the calf limb during calving
Trauma to front of leg - cow going down in the crush
Recumbency
What are the clinical signs of radial paralysis?
Overflexion of the leg
Cant weight bear
Scuffing top of foot when walking
What are the clinical signs of brachial plexus evulsion?
No muscle control in forelimb whatsoever
Flaccid, non weight bearing limb
What can cause brachial plexus evulsion?
Excess traction or abduction of the forelimb
What are the clinical signs of suprascapular nerve damage?
Limb abducts when weight bearing
Supraspinatus atrophy
What are the main nerves of the hindlimb?
Femoral nerve
Obturator nerve (branch of sciatic)
Sciatic nerve
What does the sciatic nerve branch into below the stifle?
Peroneal nerve
Tibial nerve
Where do the peroneal nerve and the tibial nerve run in relation to each other?
Peroneal nerve - more cranial, running down dorsal/lateral aspect of tibia
Tibial nerve - more caudal, running down back of hindleg
Damage to what nerve causes calving paralysis? Why?
Obturator nerve paralysis - inside the pelvic girdle so get crushed by big calf
Where does the obturator nerve arise from? What are its outflows?
Arises from sciatic nerve
L4, L5, L6
What muscles does the obturator nerve innervate?
Adductor muscles of the hindlimb
