From tertiary spread of infection, from the umbilicus or generalised bacteraemia

Lameness
Joint heat
Pain and swelling
How do you diagnose septic arthritis in calves?
Usually presenting signs
Can to arthrocentesis but not commonly done
What antibiotics do you use to treat septic arthritis is calves?
Broad spectrum antibiotics - have a mixed gram positive and gram negative infection
eg. amoxycillin, oxytetracycline
What is the prognosis for septic arthritis is calves?
Good if treated early and aggressively
If left untreated then get severe joint damage
How do you prevent septic arthritis in calves?
Good calving hygeine - umbilicus
Application of topical naval dressing
What usually causes septic arthritis in older cows?
Penetrating injury
What cows does hip dislocation occur in?
Adult cows after traumatic abduction - splits
After calving
What is the most common way the hip dislocates in cows?
Femoral head displaced craniodorsally
How can you tell a cow has hip displacement?
Manipulation of the leg - restricted movement, crepitus
Will see asymmetrical pelvis, smaller triangle of points of hip
What are the treatment options for hip dislocation in cows?
Replacement by manipulation - soon after dislocation, heavily sedated with xylazine
Euthanasia
What is the prognosis for hip dislocation in cows?
Good if uncomplicated case
Poor if dislocated for a while
What musculoskeletal problem does mycoplasma cause?
Severe arthritis in joint
Hindlimb oedema
