Lab 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Decision making strategies: Maximizing and Satisficing

A

Maximizing: Where one tries to make the very best choice even if it involves a lengthy search
Satisficing: When you choose a reasonably good (not perfect) option sooner than later

Q

Creative thinking processes: Divergent vs convergent

A

Divergent: Mental approach that takes many paths to find a solution
Convergent: Uses a single best answer to solve a problem

Q

Latent inhibition and why is it important

A

Latent inhibition: The ability to block out unnecessary information - reduced latent inhibition may enhance creativity since allowing a little more random information into the mind helps people think. One study found that students with low latent inhibition scored higher on the remotes associate task. High latent inhibition is beneficial when not wanting to be distracted while working on a problem

Q

Creativity test: Divergent: alternative uses test

A

Designed in 1967 and asks an individual to think of as many uses as possible for a simple object

Q

Creativity test: Divergent: Incomplete figure task

A

Designed in 1966 where you draw to complete a picture and name it in 3 minutes

Q

Creativity test: Convergent: Riddles (Lateral thinking puzzles)

A

De Bono links lateral thinking with humour to help the audience see a different thought pattern which was not initially obvious

Q

Creativity test: Convergent: Remotes associates (RAT)

A

Developed by Martha Mednick in 1962 and is considered a valid measure of creativity. Each RAT question is presented by 3 cue words that are all linked by a 4th word. A typical person can solve most of the easy items, half of the medium items and a few of the hard items

Q

IV, DV, CV

A

IV: Feedback and difficulty of task
DV: Speed (reaction time in seconds) and accuracy (How many you got right)
CV: Same number of trials, multiple trials averaged and random order viewing

Q

Hypothesis

A

It will be easier to answer easier questions. The more creative you are, the more difficult question you’ll be able to answer. Feedback will help you learn more than just practice alone

Experimental design

A

What is the effect of feedback and difficulty of question on your ability to correctly come up with a connecting word controlling for number of items, random error and practice effects
