Lab 1 Flashcards
Three fundamental psychological needs (self determination theory)
- Competence (When one can successfully meet challenges and learn new skills)
- Autonomy (The need to feel in control of one’s behaviour and decisions)
- Relatedness (The need to feel connected to others)
Describe FLOW
Flow is a psychological state of deep, immersive engagement in an activity, where people feel fully absorbed and involved in what they are doing. It was first described by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi in the 1970s. Results from experiences that have clear goals with feedback, challenges suited to skills and are autotelic activities (worth doing for own sake)
Merging of action and awareness, heightened concentration, suspension of irrelevant stimuli, loss of ego and an altered sense of time and space
Generally leads to increased self esteem levels
Correlations
Often used to describe the degree of relationship or “going togetherness” of two variables.
Positive correlation: As x increases, y increases (Move to right)
Negative correlation: As x increases, y decreases (Move to left)
No Correlation: Variables have no relationship (circle)
Three rules of thumb
Draw a circle around the dots
Leaning right: Positive Leaning left: Negative O = no correlation
Thinner the circle, the stronger the correlation
Explain IV, DV and CV
1 IV: Feedbacks
2 DVs: Speed and accuracy ( a pre test and post test design)
2 CVs: Same amount of trials, multiple trials averaged and random order viewing
Experimental question
What is the effect of feedback on your ability to correctly identify strength of correlation (accuracy) and speed of response (RT) while controlling for range, practice, number of items, random error and practice effects.
