Integumentary System Flashcards
What does the integumentary system contain?
Skin, accessory structures
What are the functions of the integumentary system?
Protection, sensation, temperature regulation, excretion
What are the three layers of skin?
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis (subcutaneous)
What is the epidermis?
Top layer of skin, mainly keratinocytes, relatively thin
What are keratinocytes?
cells that multiply at the bottom layer of the epidermis and as they move up in the layers become more and more filled with keratin until they die
What are the layers of the epidermal epithelium?
Stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum, gransulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale
What is the stratum corneum?
Thich, outer, dead keratin-filled cells, waterproof, falls off
What is the stratum lucidum?
palms and soles, clear layer
What is the stratum granulosum?
keratin granules in cells, cells die and flatten
What is the stratum spinosum?
Spiny, keratin fibers form
What is the stratum basale?
dividing cells, single later, melanocytes
What are the three skin cancers?
Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma
What is basal cell carcinoma?
dome shape, pearly flesh colored piple that doesnt go away, most common
What is squamous cell carcinoma?
flat reddish brown patch of skin, uv rays, can spread to other cells, second most common
What is melanoma?
most dangerous and aggressive, melanocyte cancer
What is a first-degree burn?
mild reddening of epidermis
What is a second-degree burn?
partial thickness, epidermis and dermis, pain, swelling, redness
What is a third-degree burn?
full thickness, through the dermis, charred skin that numbs
What is the rule of 9s?
division of the body in percentages of 9%
What is the difference between a full thickness and a split thickness skin graft?
full thickness is a full piece of skin while split thickness is a divided piece of skin to make up for a larger area
What is the dermis?
dense irregular connective tissue, vascular, accessory structures
What accessory structures are in the dermis?
hair follicles, nerve endings, sensory receptors, glands, blood vessels and lymph vessels
What are the two principle layers of the dermis?
papillary and reticular
What is the papillary layer of the dermis?
20% of dermis, papillae extend into epidermis
