Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What is the preferential use of sugar?
Means that sugar is used first if available before the body looks to other sources
Where is energy stored in sugar?
The electrons of hydrogen carry energy
What is oxidation?
removal of electrons
What is reduction?
addition of electrons
What occurs in respiration?
Glucose is oxidized
Oxygen is reduced
What happens to removed electrons?
They are moved to the electron transport system
What are the electron carriers?
NAD+ and FAD
What are the steps of cellular respiration?
Glycolysis Oxidation of pyruvate Kreb's cycle Electron transport system Chemiosmosis
What is glycolysis?
Cytoplasm process
Splits glucose into pyruvate
Nothing is removed and no oxygen is used
Produces a little energy
What is the oxidation of pyruvate?
Occurs twice for each glucose
Removes a carbon as CO2, leaving acetyl, which is formed into acetyl CoA
No oxygen used
yields some energy
What is the citric acid cycle?
Occurs twice per glucose Occurs in mitochondria Breaks the acetyl CoA into CO2 uses no oxygen yields some energy
What do glycolysis, oxidation of pyruvate, and the citric acid cycle all do?
Capture high energy electrons and placed them on electron carriers
What happens in the ETC?
Electrons are moved, whch results in the formation of water and a buildup of p+ outside the mitochondria
What happens in chemiosmosis?
P+ is moved back into the matrix through special pores “ATPases”, this movement is the energy to make ATP
What is fermentation?
Catabolic
Incomplete breakdown
Temporary source of energy
Doesn’t used oxygen
