The Resources Unit (RU) has a specialized task at an operation. The Resources Unit is a functional unit within the Planning Section primarily responsible for recording the status of resources committed to the incident. If there is no Planning Section Chief, the RU will report directly to the Incident Commander.

The Resources Unit is responsible for maintaining status information of all resources allocated to the incident. This unit should have a system for keeping track of the current location and status of all assigned resources and maintain a list of all resources committed to the incident. This shall include:
• Oversee the check-in of all resources
• Supervise the maintenance of the Command Board and Lobby Command Log if used
• Contact units by handie-talkie to insure that their correct location is listed on the Command Board
• Identify operating sectors and the units therein
• Track changes in the status of resources. All status changes must be promptly
reported to the Resource Unit Leader
• The RU shall take on the duties of the Communications Unit(under logistics) until relieved by another Battalion Chief designated as the CU.
A Battalion Chief shall be special called by the dispatcher to perform the duties of Resources Unit Leader at the following: **

- The Incident Commander may special call a Battalion Chief as Resources Unit Leader if necessary
• The Battalion Chief assigned as Resources Unit Leader shall don the ICS vest with the insert “RESOURCES UNIT LEADER.” - *Note: An Acting Battalion Chief may be assigned as the Resources Unit Leader

4.1 While Responding: RUL
Ascertain the identity and designation of the units that have responded, or are responding to the incident from the:
• MDT printout incident summarry
• Dispatcher (if unavailable via MDT)
• On arrival promptly report to the Incident Commander
• The RUL shall be stationed at the location of the COMMAND BOARD
• The RUL will be responsible for maintaining the Command Board. The Command
Board must be kept accurate throughout the duration of the incident
*TEST**• The RUL shall designate an area where unassigned units will remain intact until assigned
• The IC shall determine the needed level of resources required at the Staging area. The RUL in conjunction with the Staging Area Manager, shall maintain this level until the incident is under control
The Resources Unit Leader shall call each Chief Officer (Sector/Group Supervisor) on the tactical channel and ascertain the following:
• The sector/group the Chief Officer is operating in. This information is to be plotted on the Command Board
• The identity of units (Engine, Ladder, Special Unit) operating in their sector/group. This information is to be marked on the Command Board next to the designation of the Chief responsible for that sector/group
• The Resources Unit Leader shall operate on the Tactical Channel. The Resources Unit Leader assigned firefighter shall have his handie-talkie on the Command Channel for relay of messages to the Incident Commander
• Whenever the Resources Unit Leader is unable to contact a unit or member equipped with a Handie-Talkie, they shall contact a member or unit in that area and have them investigate and report
• The Resources Unit Leader shall inform the Incident Commander of any necessitated relief of units, and after consultation, implement such procedures of relief. This shall include change of tour relief when operations approach 0800 or 1700 hours
*TEST**The Resources Unit Leader will continue to monitor the handie talkie for emergency transmissions after the arrival of a dedicated Communications Unit Leader.
