Greek Beyond GCSE Chapter 1 Flashcards
ἆρα μὴ πάντα τὸν σῖτον ἐφάγετε, ὦ παῖδες;
Surely you didn’t eat all the food, children?
This messenger is asking if we know about the things that happened there.
πότερον τόδε τὸ πλοῖον ἄμεινον ἐστὶν ἢ ἐκεῖνο, ὦ ναῦτα;
Is this boat better, or that one, sailor?
ἆρ’ ἐπύθου ὁπότε οἱ νέοι στρατιῶται ἀφίξονται;
Did you find out when the new soldiers would arrive?
It is difficult to get to know if the road is safe in winter
The women in the city asked where the allies were being sent from

I want to learn whether the money is enough or not, slave.
ἆρ’ οὐ φιλεῖς τὴν λόγοις οὕτω χρωμένην, ὦ νεανία;
Surely you love the woman who uses words in this way, young man?
I shall ask the speaker to say how he persuaded the assembly.
We want to find out whether you think the slave himself or his master is
responsible.
This woman asked whether I had seen the slave running away.
Surely the citizens do not trust that politician?
ἀρα μη οἱ πολιται πιστευουσιν ἐκεινῳ τῳ ῥητορι;
Do you know who wrote the best letter, teacher?
ἀρ’ οἰσθα ὁστις ἐγραψε την ἀριστην ἐπιστολην, ὠ διδασκαλε;

I want to find out whether the enemy damaged the fields or the houses.

I do not know who sent the letter.

The teacher wanted to find out how many of the children were present.

Surely the young men obtained so many prizes that they were admired by
everyone?

It is difficult to find out from where the plague began, and how.
ποῖ φεύγεις, ὦ δοῦλε, καὶ διὰ τί;
Where are you running away to, slave, and why?
ἆρα μὴ ἡ παῖς τοιαύτη ἐστὶν ὥστε ταῦτα πράσσειν;
Surely the girl is not the sort to do these things?
So many people arrived then that we were unable to learn where they had come
from.
ἆρ’ ὅδε ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος οὗ ἡ συμφορὰ ἐγένετο;
Is this the place where the disaster happened?
The soldier has a sword of a type I never saw before.
Despite knowing neither how nor when these walls were made, I think that they
were somehow made by human beings.
What sort of food do you like, children?
ποιον σιτον φιλειτε, ὠ παιδες;
The old man asked the stranger where the temple was.
Who are those slaves, and where are they running to?
τίνες εἰσιν ἐκεινοι οἱ δουλοι, και ποι τρεχουσιν;
Does the judge know how many of the women helped the man guarding the gate?
ἀρα ὁ κριτης οἰδεν ὁποσαι των γυναικων ἐβοηθησαν τῳ την πυλην φυλασσοντι;
From where did these slaves whom I saw in the marketplace come?
ποθεν ἠλθον οὑτοι οἱ δουλοι οὑς ἐν τῃ ἀγορᾳ εἰδον;
Let us always seek justice, citizens!
ποῖ φύγω, ὑπὸ τούτων διωκόμενος;
Where should I flee to, being chased by these people?
Do not take the old man’s money, children!
Since we are in terrible danger, let us now sacrifice to the gods!
Always trust the general, soldiers, even though you do not always know what he
intends to do!
Let us sit beside the river in order to eat!
Throw away all these books, slaves!
Do not leave the weapons near the door, guard!
ὁμολογοῦμεν περὶ τῆσδε τῆς βουλῆς, ἀλλὰ τί εἴπωμεν περὶ ἐκείνης;
We agree about this plan, but what are we to say about that one?
Do not listen to the messenger’s words, citizens!
