External Conflict
Takes place entirely within the character’s own mind; struggle between the opposing needs and desires or emotions of a person
Internal Conflict
The process of revealing the personality of a character in a story
Characterization
The author simply tells you about the character directly
Direct Characterization
The author gives you clues about a character through dialogue, behavior, appearance, and what other characters say about them
Indirect Characterization
Has an epiphany and makes a change in the story
Dynamic Character
Does not change
Static Character
The use of clues to hint at events that will occur later in the plot
Foreshadowing
Larger than life main character of an epic; represents the characteristics of a particular culture values
Epic Hero
It compares something you can’t understand to something from everyday life; extended simile; also known as Homeric Simile
Epic Simile
