What happened in January 1, 1863

A

Slaves were freed in all confederate controlled territories. When union forces captured a confederate territory, slaves were freed. Slaves in border states weren’t set free. The intention was to not hurt the south. If Lincoln freed all the slaves, the border states might have seceded from the union as well

A

Freed few slaves. Slaves had to escape farms to the north or be liberated by union troops. This war became about slavery. This would keep Europe from supporting the south. This forced the south to fight to defend slavery
