Adams onis treaty
The us had issues with Spain and Florida. It was a safe haven for runaway slaves and Indian raids. Adams tells Spain to give up Florida. Spain gives Florida to the US and gave up claims to Oregon. US gives up claim to Texas
Monroe doctrine
Latin America was colonized by several European nations. Some of those colonies were revolting and gaining their independence. The US was concerned with those countries may interfere with the US, so Monroe issued a statement
What 3 things did the Monroe doctrine say
- Americas were closed to colonization.
- Attempts by Europe to colonize the Americas would be seen as a threat to the US.
- Promised that the US would stay out of European affairs.
What did the Monroe doctrine do
The Monroe doctrine did very little because the US didn’t have the power to back up its big talk
