1st democratic convention
Charleston South Carolina
The party supported the northern democrats ideas of popular sovereignty which caused 50 delegates to leave the convention. The party was unable to nominate a vandalize for president because the south didn’t support popular sovereignty. Democrats decide to wait till June to try again
2nd democratic convention
Baltimore Maryland
This time almost all of the southern delegates left the convention. This would mean that the southern democrats would have a candidate for president as would the northern democrats

It was illegal for the south to secede and it said that in the constitution
Crittenden plan
Presented in February 1861. Crittenden proposed amendments to the constitution that would protect slavery and reestablish the Missouri compromise. This time the northerners weren’t happy so this compromise failed
