Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Cranial Nerves
Attach to the brain and pass through foramina of the skull
Paired & Numbered from I–XII (i.e. 1-12)
Primarily serve head and neck structures
All nerves attach to brain stem except nerves I and II
Cranial Nerves I and II
Cranial nerves I and II attach to the forebrain
All others attach to the brain stem
I - Olfactory Nerves
Sensory nerves of smell
II - Optic Nerve
Sensory nerve of vision
III - Oculomotor Nerve
Innervates (motor) four of the extrinsic eye muscles
IV - Trochlear Nerve
Innervates (motor) an extrinsic eye muscle
V - Trigeminal Nerve
- Provides sensory innervation to the face (face, scalp, teeth, chewing motions)
- Motor innervation to chewing muscles
- 3 divisions:Opthalmac
Maxillary, Mandibular
V - Trigeminal Nerve Divisions
Opthalmac
Maxillary
Mandibular
VI - Abducens Nerve
Abducts the eyeball (motor)
VII - Facial Nerve
Innervates (motor) muscles of facial expression
5 Divisions:Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Mandibular, &
Cervical
VII - Facial Nerve Divisions
Temporal
Zygomatic
Buccal
Mandibular
Cervical
VIII - Vestibulocochlear Nerve
Sensory nerve of hearing and balance
IX - Glossopharyngeal Nerve
Innervates structures of the tongue and pharynx (motor)
X - Vagus Nerve
A mixed sensory and motor nerve
“Wanders” into thorax and abdomen
(extends onto the abdomen)
Longest cranial nerve
XI - Accessory Nerve
An accessory part of the vagus nerve
A motor nerve of the SCM and trapezius muscle
