Arteries of the Head and Neck (Q3,P5) Flashcards
Right Common Carotid
Right Common Carotid branches from the brachiocephalic trunk
Left Common Carotid
Left Common Carotid is the 2nd branch of the aortic arch
Anatomical Guide for the Common Carotids
Along the medial border of the SCM. In the groove between the lateral border of the trachea and medial border of the SCM
Anatomical Limits for the Right Carotid
Begins at a point behind the sternoclavicular articulation and extends to the level of the superior border of the thyroid cartilage.
Anatomical Limits for the Left Carotid
Begins at the level of the 2nd costal cartilage at the highest point of the arch of the aorta, and extends to the level of the superior border of the thyroid cartilage.
- The left common carotid is smaller and deeper.
Linear Guide for the Common Carotids
A line drawn from the sternoclavicular articulation to the anterior surface of the lobe of the ear.
Branches of the Common Carotids
External and Internal Carotid Arteries
Eight Branches of the External Carotids Artery
- Facial Artery
- Posterior Auricular Artery
- Ascending Pharyngeal Artery
- Superficial Temporal Artery – terminal branch
- Maxillary Artery (external facial artery) – terminal branch
- Superior Thyroid Artery
- Lingual Artery
- Occipital Artery
Four Branches of the Internal Carotid Artery
- Ophthalmic Artery
- Anterior Cerebral Artery
- Middle Cerebral Artery
- Posterior Communicating Artery
Cerebral Arterial Circle/Circle of Willis
- Cerebral Anastomoses
- Unites the brain’s anterior and posterior blood supplies provided by the internal carotid and vertebral arteries
Nine Arteries of the Circle of WIllis
- Right and Left Internal Carotid Arteries (2)
- Anterior Communicating Artery (1)
- Right and Left Anterior Cerebral Arteries (2)
- Right and Left Posterior Cerebral Arteries (2)
- Right and Left Posterior Communicating Arteries (2)
