core practical 1 Flashcards

1
Q

what is the procedure

A
  1. set up the apparatus to capture and masseur gas evolved from the reaction in the boiling tube
  2. place 30 cm^3 of 1 mol dm^-3 ethanoic acid in a boiling tube
  3. place approximately 0.05 grams of calcium carbonate in a test tube, weigh the test tube and its contents accurately
  4. remove the bung from the boiling tube and tip the calcium carbonate into the boiling tube quickly replacing the bung
  5. what the reaction is over (no more fizzing the calcium is dissolved) measure to the volume of the gas produced
  6. reweigh the test tube that contained the calcium carbonate
  7. repeat the experiment 6 more times, increasing the mass of calcium carbonate by 0.05 ( do not exceed the 0.40 g)

Q

what is the biggest error in this experiment and how can we fix it

A

the error is gas being lost because the bung wasn’t replaced, the solution is taking the test tube the acid is in placing it in the vessel of the calcium carbonating, and then tipping in to get the reagents to react (so the vessel would stay closed)
