10B.1 Flashcards
what are halogenoalkanes
it is a homologous series of organic compounds with the general formula of CnH2n+1X
what is a primary halogenalkane
a halogenoalkane where the carbon atom bearing the halide is attached to one other alkyl group RX
what is a secondary halogenalkane
a halogenoalkane where the carbon that is bearing the halide is attached to two other alkyl groups R2CHX
what is a tertiary halogenalkane
a halogenoalkane where the carbon bearing the halide is attached to 3 other alkyl groups R3CX
what makes halogenoalkanes polar
the electronegativity of the halogen atom is much higher than the carbon atom making their bond polar with the carbon being the positive or electron-deficient part of the molecule
what are nucleophiles
they are species that donate a lone pair of electrons to form a covalent bond with an electron-deficient atom (they are negative ions attracted to positive charge )
is there a colour change in hydrolysis reactions
no there is no colour change
what is formed in hydrolysis reactions
alcohol and HX or ions of X AND H
