3B.3 Bonding in Discrete simple molecules Flashcards
1
Q
what are Discrete simple molecules
A
they are an electrically neutral group of 2 or more atoms held together by covalent bonds
2
Q
what is the octet rule and is it always correct
A
the octet rule states that in order for an atom to be stable its outer shell must have 8 electrons. this is not always true as in covalent bonding the central atom doesn’t always have to have 8 electrons on its outer shell for it to be stable
3
Q
what is a displayed (full structural formula)
A
a formula that shows each bonding pair a line is drawn between two atoms involved
